Dhaka – The government is presumably persuading a policy of ‘zero tolerance against corruption’ to offset the rise of the endemic corruption in the society after names of two retired chiefs of disciplined forces have surfaced to alleged wrongdoings by them.
“The incumbent government headed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is uncompromising with grafts,” Obaidul Quader, a senior member of Prime Minister Hasina’s cabinet with the portfolio of Transport and Bridges affairs, told a news conference on Tuesday in Dhaka.
Quader’s briefing against corruption came at a time when the state-run anti-graft watchdog, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), launched an investigation into alleged corruption by Benazir Ahmed, the former head of Bangladesh’s police force, and the US visa restriction imposed on Aziz Ahmed, a retired general who served as chief of Bangladesh Army, over corruption allegations.
Aziz Ahmed trashed the US allegations and claimed he was not involved in any wrongdoing. Benazir’s cases of ‘amassing ill-gotten wealth’ were taken into consideration by the ACC. And, the court asked the ACC to confiscate the assets.
“The government is not embarrassed over Aziz and Benazir issues at all and it has the courage to bring all the corrupt persons to justice,” Quader, also the general secretary of the ruling Awami League party, said.
“No criminal will be spared. The head of government is showing ‘zero tolerance’ against corruption,” the minister said adding that the ACC is free to investigate the issue of former IGP.
Investigation is in progress on illegal properties by the former chief of police, he added.
He said the ACC could also carry out investigation into former army chief Aziz Ahmed’s alleged corruption.
“Every wrongdoer will be brought to justice,” he added.
He said the Awami League government is always ready to take actions against corruption. It is not a crash programme while the government has kept constant vigilance over corruption, he said.
“No criminals will be spared. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has proved it,” said Quader.
