Dhaka – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has pledged that her government would help rebuild the houses destroyed by the deadly tropical cyclone that left a trail of destructions in coastal districts.
“I will make arrangements so that those who lost homes can rebuild or repair their homes. I will provide seeds and fertilizer so that the farmers could resume agriculture afresh,” the Prime Minister told a gathering of several thousand people at Government Mojahar Uddin Biswas Degree College in the southern township of Kolapara.
Hasina flew to the southern district to see damages caused by the cyclone Remal on the ground and to distribute relief goods among the affected people.
The cyclone that lashed the Bangladeshi coastline with wind speed of up to 120 kilometers on Monday caused severe damage to the households, croplands, and infrastructure like bridges, culvert and flood-protection dams in the coastal districts. Thirteen people were killed during the storm.
The Prime Minister said her government would shortly take necessary steps to rehabilitate the protection embankments, bridges and culverts.
“Please, keep trust on me, I’ll do everything possible for you,” Hasina assured the cyclone-affected people. More than 3.7 million people are affected by the Remal, according to initial assessment prepared by the Disaster Management and Relief Ministry.
She mentioned that that the overall development of the impoverished southern region was only possible because of the Awami League is in power.
“There were many people came to the power, but they didn’t do any development activities for this region,” she said adding that natural calamities would come again and again but her government would always remain active to face the disasters.
She said the AL government is doing whatever needed for ensuring basic needs of the people.
Presided over by Kalapara Awami League Vice President Nirmal Nandi, State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Mohibbur Rahman, Awami League Joint Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim and Organising Secretary Advocate Afzal Hossain also spoke on the ocassion.
The Prime Minister also undertook an aerial visit to Mathbaria and Patharghata areas in Pirojpur and Barguna districts respectively to see herself the trail of havoc caused by the storm.
Hasina flew to the area by chopper in the morning and returned to Dhaka in the afternoon after holding meeting with senior officials of Barisal to finalize a roadmap for the next course of actions in the cyclone-affected southern districts.
