Sylhet:- The onrush of waters from upstream rivers have flooded vast swathes of land in north-eastern district of Sylhet, marooning nearly 400,000 people, officials said on Thursday.
The government opened shelters to accommodate the flood affected people in Kanaighat, Jaintapur, Gowainghat, Companyganj and Zakiganj sub-districts.
Heavy rain triggered by the tropical cyclone Remal in the upstream, especially in the hilly rivers across the border caused the flash flood, according to the Water Development Board.
The board said waters of Surma, Kushiyara and Sari rivers were flowing above the danger level at five points until Thursday afternoon.
District unit of the disaster management committee at a meeting in the wake of the flash flood assessed the need of the people in the affected area.
Deputy Commissioner of the district Kamrul Hasan visited the flood affected upazilas.
Local administration said the members of the armed forces were alerted to respond to the crisis, if needed.
